I get this question a lot – so I figured it was time for a blog post! There are so many coaches out there, it can be hard to figure out who is going to be the best fit for you without getting completely overwhelmed. Here are X pointers to help you find the best coach for you.

What results are you looking for?

Spend some time journaling about your goals, vision for the future, and where you are now. What are the things you think you need to get you from A to B? Get specific. Many coaches have specific niches that can laser target issues if there is one major thing you are looking to improve. It also helps you have productive conversations with potential coaches when you are an informed shopper who has a solid idea of the results you want to get from coaching.

Hint: if you’re holding back because you aren’t sure what is possible, journal out your perfect day, 5 years from now. What does life look like?

How do you want to be coached?

Are you looking for a group coaching experience, mastermind, or individual coaching? There are benefits and drawbacks to each format, and you want to be sure you have your own personality traits in mind as you start looking so you don’t end up in a large group program when you’re someone who needs the accountability of weekly 1:1 calls. If you aren’t sure, or are open and generally self motivated, this is less important. I personally think the sweet spot is a mix- a group program that offers 1:1 sessions. You get the benefit of seeing other people being coached (asking questions you didn’t realize you had!) and the benefit of the coach’s undivided attention during your 1:1 sessions.

Reach out to your network

I recommend networking and referrals for coaches who are building businesses AND for potential clients who are looking for a coach! Have any of your friends or business besties worked with a coach? Did they get crazy good results in a certain program? Are they a loyal listener of a coach’s podcast? Do you have any coaches in your personal network? A good coach will be able to refer you to someone in their network if you aren’t the right fit to work together. Facebook groups, Pinterest, and other social media can also be a great place to find a solid coach – just do your due diligence before hiring.

Start following a few coaches

Get your FB stalk on… once you’ve identified several coaches who might be the right fit, check out their online presence. Are they putting out solid content? Do they have testimonials? Do you like their personality in their Facebook lives? Did their free content help you? You can get a great feel for how legit a coach is – and how your personalities will fit together – by browsing their online footprint.

Get on the phone (or video call!)

Once you’ve got a good idea of who you might want to work with, take advantage of their free discovery/consult call – if they offer one. Be completely honest with them about your struggles, where you are now, and where you want to go (even the dreams you’re afraid to share because they seem too big). Be prepared with some questions going in, and try to come to a decision on the call if possible. Waiting and deliberating typically only serves to make us more confused and less confident. Keep asking questions until you know.

Stretch – and go with your gut

Your intuition is going to tell you if this is right or not. It’s going to sound like “HELL YES BUT I’M FREAKING TERRIFIED!” This is what our brains say when we are about to take a massive leap out of our comfort zones, especially if this is your first coach. Don’t worry – it’s a good sign! It’s going to be a bit of a stretch to make this investment in yourself – or your business, but on some deep level, you will know this is the right move.

Ok mama — go out there and find your coach! And if you like what you see here, I’d love to explore if we’re a good fit.
